Behaviour that is not acceptable in our school community:
Bullying behaviour may manifest itself in a number of ways such as the examples listed below, but in any of its forms, it can leave people feeling hurt, distressed and frightened, which may prevent successful learning and personal development from taking place.
- name-calling, teasing, abuse, putdowns, sarcasm, insults, threats
- hitting, punching, kicking, scratching, tripping, spitting
- excluding, ostracising, alienating, making inappropriate gestures
- spreading rumours, dirty looks, hiding or damaging possessions, malicious text and messages via email/social networks/mobile phone applications, inappropriate use of camera phones.
WHAT WE DO WHEN BULLYING OCCURS
- We use various strategies as required with an emphasis on restorative practices and acknowledging grievances.
- We contact parents/carers in regards to reports of bullying as quickly as possible and provide information as to the school’s intended course of action
- De-escalation strategies may be employed and physical separation of person/people bullying where required
- Sanctions, including loss of privileges may be administered
- An assessment of additional support needs for person being bullied or person bullying will be undertaken and where appropriate we will involve partnership agencies/support services
Advice for Parents
Parents can help by discussing bullying with their children, particularly these key points:
- NO person should suffer physical harm or personal abuse.
- It is an act of courage to report bullying, if it is happening to you, OR, if you see it happening to someone else.
- Bullying should NOT be a part of the normal growing up experience.
- Fall-outs and changes of friendship groupings are not uncommon in young people but efforts should be made by all, to ensure this does not lead to the isolation of any individual.
- The school always take reports of bullying seriously and is always prepared to discuss the matter in confidence.
Each case is treated individually – some require no more than a quiet word, but extreme cases will result in firm action, including police involvement if necessary.
Advice for Students
- SHARE any problems by telling someone – your parents, or any teacher, your friends, a senior student or any of the support staff.
- WRITE it down if you do not feel able to initially talk about your experience. You can leave confidential messages for Pupil Support teachers on both school campuses.
- TEXT the anti-bullying textline if you would like to provide the school with information about an incident anonymously. (07738858084)
- REMEMBER the school will investigate claims of bullying but will do so in a sensitive way so those concerned are treated fairly and justly.
- ELIMINATE bullying by REPORTING incidents you see.
- SUPPORT those who experience bullying.
- VALUE the diversity which exists in our students and do NOT let difference give rise to ‘slagging’.

If you wish to discuss a bullying issue, contact the appropriate Pupil Support teacher. If the matter is very urgent and Pupil Support teachers are not available, please ask to speak to a Depute Head Teacher, who will be able to investigate your concern.
