We offer the opportunity for some of our S6 students to undertake the Science baccalaureate here at James Gillespie’s High School. To achieve this award students must achieve awards in qualifying subjects and complete an interdisciplinary project.

Below is an example of the type of interdisciplinary project undertaken by one of our students:

‘For my science baccalaureate the investigated topic was energy drinks. I performed my research initially before creating a survey which was used to see the opinions of staff and students with regards to energy drink consumption. The main findings were for simplicity detailed in a brief leaflet, which, hopefully is a resource that anyone can understand. Energy drink leaflet.

The key points within this leaflet were:

  • Energy drinks are  generally not recommended for  those under 16 owing to the high levels, of caffeine, sugar and other ingredients.
  • A survey of 2000 teenagers in the UK found that 1 in 20 skipped breakfast in favour of just an energy drink.’
