French is spoken in 55 countries across five continents by over 200 million people. At JGHS, studying French develops communication skills, cultural awareness and a global outlook that is valued by universities and employers. Pupils develop confidence in speaking, reading, listening and writing — skills that open doors across education, travel and careers worldwide.
S1 – S2
All S1 and S2 pupils study two languages. Pupils who studied French at primary school receive 2 hours of French per week as their main language, alongside 1 hour of a second language (German or Mandarin). In S1 and S2, pupils develop awareness of the wider French-speaking world, learning to give personal information, describe their lives and talk about hobbies and leisure — comparing life in Scotland with life in French-speaking countries.
