As part of the wider Faculty of Humanities the Department of Modern Studies and Politics offers a range of courses to support students from S1-S6 in their understanding of political issues; social issues; and global issues.
Candidates develop the knowledge and skills to interpret and participate in the socio-economic and political processes they will encounter in their daily lives.
The Modern Studies and Politics Department offers distinct courses from S1 to S6 in Modern Studies: from BGE in S1-3, N3-5 in S3-5, Higher in S5-6, and Higher and Advanced Higher in S6.
For S6 students exclusively the department offers additional courses in Higher Politics, and the Scottish Baccalaureate in Social Sciences.
The wider faculty also deliver courses in RME, RMPS, Psychology, Philosophy, Business Management, Administration, Economics, Mental Health and Well-being, People and Society and Princes Trust. *subject to student uptake each session.
Broad General Education
S1 – BGE: Children Across the World – A comparative analysis of political and socio-economic inequalities in Scotland, the UK and global comparator countries: The causes, the consequences, and the responses to those inequalities.
S2 – BGE: Democracy and Dictatorship – a comparative analysis of political systems and society in Scotland/ UK, political ideologies and various global comparator countries.
