The Sports Coaching National Progression Award (NPA) is an exciting and practical qualification for pupils with an interest in sport, physical activity and coaching. The course develops coaching knowledge, interpersonal skills and an understanding of professional practice — skills valued across the sport and leisure industries.

Sports Coaching NPA is available at SCQF Level 5 in S5 and SCQF Level 6 in S6.
Entry Requirements
Level 5: An interest in sport, physical activity and coaching; introduction to coaching from a Sports Governing Body, club or school / college programme.
Level 6: Pass at National 5 Physical Education and/or NPA Exercise and Fitness Leadership; NPA SCQF Level 5 in Sports Coaching; an interest in sport and coaching.
SCQF Level 5 — Course Content
- Introduce coaching skills in relation to knowing yourself, others and coaching
- Introduce assistant coaches to their role in a supervised environment
- Develop an understanding of professional practice in sports coaching
- Assist in the delivery of planned sports coaching sessions
SCQF Level 6 — Course Content
Level 6 builds on the Level 5 award with greater independence and responsibility:
- Introduce coaching skills in relation to knowing yourself, others, and coaching
- Demonstrate self-awareness in the context of your own roles and responsibilities as a coach practising under minimal supervision
- Prepare the physical environment and equipment to meet required safety standards
- Identify and respond to the needs and expectations of participants during a session
- Develop skills working with others within a coaching team
- Lead in the planning, delivery, and review of coaching sessions
