Poileasaidh Gàidhlig / Gaelic Language Policy

JGHS’s commitment to promoting and embedding Scottish Gaelic

Mu an Phoileasaidh / About the Policy

James Gillespie’s High School’s Gaelic Language Policy outlines our approach to promoting and embedding Scottish Gaelic in our uniquely bilingual secondary education setting. It covers learning and teaching, resourcing, community engagement, and our commitment to whole-school integration of the Gaelic language.

The policy reflects our belief that securing Scottish Gaelic as a living language is inseparable from enriching our students’ educational experience. It was authored by Mrs Donna MacIver, Depute Head Teacher (GME) and Darach Community Head.

📄

Bilingual Communications

All whole-school documents and communications are either fully or partially bilingual, giving equal respect to Gaelic and English.

🏫

Gaelic Across the School

Gaelic is visible in signage, tannoy announcements, web and social media, and whole-school events — embedding the language beyond the classroom.

👩‍🏫

Gaelic-Essential Recruitment

During recruitment for teaching and support posts, senior leadership reviews whether each role should be advertised as Gaelic Essential.

🤝

Community & Partnerships

We collaborate with Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Fèis Dhùn Èideann, BBC, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and many others to enrich pupils’ experiences and increase cross-generational language exposure.

⚖️

Equalities & Inclusion

We are committed to including Gaelic in our whole-school equalities improvement strategies, upholding the rights of Gaelic speakers under UNCRC Article 30.
