We are delighted to launch the James Gillespie’s online Free Shop, an important new initiative that brings together our commitments to equity, sustainability, and community wellbeing. This project has been created to ensure that every member of our school community can access the resources they need, while also contributing to a more environmentally responsible culture within the school.
The Free Shop offers a simple, universal system through which anyone can donate or “purchase” high‑quality pre‑loved items, including revision guides, books, clothing, school bags, and other useful essentials. By making this support open to all, we aim to remove any sense of stigma or hesitation around receiving donated goods. Instead, the focus is on dignity, discretion, and the shared understanding that many families experience financial pressures that may not be visible or captured by eligibility criteria such as free school meals. Hidden poverty is a reality for many, and this initiative is one way we can respond with compassion and practical support.
Alongside its equity benefits, the Free Shop also plays a valuable role in reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Re‑using items that are still in excellent condition helps to lower the environmental impact of buying new goods and prevents perfectly serviceable materials from ending up in landfill. It is a small but meaningful step towards a more sustainable school community.

If you have items you would like to donate, these can be dropped off in B3 in Bruntsfield House. Equally, if you would like to make a “purchase” to help reduce the cost of back‑to‑school essentials for your own children, please feel free to do so. Every contribution—whether donating, browsing, or making use of the shop—helps strengthen our community and supports the values we share.
